A man from Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur chocked his mother to death so that he could claim her life insurance payout to repay the loans he had taken to play games on an online platform, reported NDTV.
According to the report, the accused, Himanshu, allegedly killed his mother to claim Rs 50 lakh insurance and then disposed of her body near the Yamuna river bank in a jute bag.
Police told NDTV that the accused was addicted to gaming on a popular platform called Zupee.
Himanshu’s repeated losses made him borrow more and keep playing. When he realised he had to repay around Rs 4 lakh he hatched a plan.
He first stole his paternal aunt’s jewellery and bought life insurance policies worth Rs 50 lakh each for his parents. Subsequently, he allegedly choked his mother, Prabha, to death when his father was out, said police. He then drove the Yamuna river bank in his tractor to disposed of her body.
On returning from his visit to Chitrakoot temple, Himanshu’s father, Roshan Singh, did not find his wife and son at home.
After consulting his relatives and neighbours, he came to know that his son had gone on the tractor near the river.
Later, the body was recovered from near Yamuna and Himanshu was arrested soon after.
Police probe revealed the plot he hatched to murder his mother so that he could clear his debt. “The son was on the run after murdering his mother. We caught him and unearthed the sinister crime,” senior police officer Vijay Shankar Mishra told NDTV.
However, Zupee, a well-known online gaming platform, cautions users to engage in play solely for entertainment purposes. The platform emphasises refraining from playing to generate additional income, avoiding impulsive gaming, and steering clear of playing with borrowed funds, as outlined in its set of guidelines.
