It’s not looking good for Justin Fields and the Chicago Bears.
After weeks of toying with potential destinations, Fields’ options appear to be drying up as ESPNs Adam Schefter stated on “First Take” on Tuesday.
“The teams that are looking at him would be looking at him as a backup,” Schefter said.
He once seemed destined to end up in Atlanta, but the Falcons opted to move on and snag Kirk Cousins on a massive contract in free agency.
Schefter also noted that there was a connection to the Steelers and Raiders, each of whom decided they were better off with a different player to compete for the starting quarterback slot.
“It doesn’t look like there is a starting job out there at this particular moment,” Schefter continued.
There was a chance that the Bears would decide to hold on to Fields and elect to start the season with both him and presumed No. 1 draft choice Caleb Williams.
Schefter similarly reported ahead of the 2024 Super Bowl that the “Bears have talked about the idea, as unlikely as it seems, of carrying both quarterbacks.”
Experts had predicted the Steelers would trade a second-round pick for Fields, but that cost seems too exorbitant for Pittsburgh’s blood.
Instead, they opted to bring in Russell Wilson on the league minimum contract, with the Broncos stuck with the remaining tab for the MVP-winning quarterback.
It would appear that Fields will be in limbo for the foreseeable future, with six weeks to go until late April’s NFL draft.
The last time something similar happened was with the Cardinals when they drafted Kyler Murray No. 1 overall and traded Josh Rosen during draft weekend.
That 2019 NFL Draft trade netted the Cardinals the 62nd pick in the draft that year, as well as a fifth-round pick the following year.
