When Are February 2024 Social Security Payments Coming?

by admin

Millions of Americans collect Social Security benefits each month, helping them with their finances after a long working life or due to other circumstances that mean their income is depleted.

Social Security forms the bedrock of financial means for millions of Americans. Payments are made to retired individuals aged over 65, qualifying people with disabilities and survivors of deceased claimants. However, not every claimant is paid on the same date each month.

Also known as the Old Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (OASDI) program, the tax-funded benefits provide money for those who would possibly otherwise struggle to get by. Its mission is to replace lost income resulting from factors such as old age, incapacity, or the financial support provided by a deceased spouse or parent.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is an additional payment given to elderly, blind, and disabled individuals with minimal income and assets. Often, these payments are intended to boost the income of retirees whose OASDI payments may fall short of providing a basic living.

Both programs distribute payments each month to recipients, irrespective of the reason for entitlement. The specific amount an individual receives depends on a variety of factors; for example, for pensioners it is based on their past or current earnings. This means that not everyone receives the same amount.

However, regardless of how much a person is paid, recipients of SSA benefits are not all paid on the same day each month. The date a claimant is paid is determined by various factors, including the type of benefit, date of birth, and where they live.

Newsweek has broken down all of the Social Security payment dates for February 2024.

February 1

For those that receive SSI and Social Security benefits or were signed on prior to 1997, this payment will be made on February 1. This also applies to claimants who currently live abroad.

February 14

Those with birthdays that fall between the first and 10th of their birth month will receive their payment on Wednesday, February 14.

February 21

Any claimant who has a birthday between on or between 11 and 20 of February will receive their monthly amount on February 17.

February 28

Lastly, recipients with a birthday falling between the 21 and 31 of any month will be paid on February 28.

The SSA outlines that if you don’t receive your payment on the expected date, you should wait three additional mailing days before contacting the agency.

This year, benefits have increased by 3.2 percent for all claimants due to inflation. The Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) has been in place since December for SSI recipients, and January this year for those that just get Social Security. In all, the Social Security Agency (SSA) says around 71 million people in the U.S. receive money from the system.

While Social Security payments increase each year based on inflation, the COLA increase is not expected to rise as much as this year in 2025.

“The Social Security COLA will be hurt by a slowing increase in the rise of inflation which will definitely impact retirees receiving Social Security,” Kevin Thompson, a certified financial planner and the founder and CEO of 9i Capital Group, told Newsweek on Friday. “This will be detrimental to seniors because food prices are quite sticky at the moment and are not coming down.”

There has also been growing concern over Social Security and the amounts it may be able to pay out in future due to concerns over the current debt crisis, with some saying Republican plans could jeopardize the welfare program.
