The dawn of a new year brings with it a unique opportunity: the chance to start moving towards big things, to harness momentum. In 2025, momentum isn’t just a concept for athletes or coaches; it’s a critical force for leaders, teams, and organizations.
In private conversations and on my podcast, I have spent much of the past two years talking with leaders from many sectors. I’ve been asking nearly all of them about momentum. The best teams, whether in sports, business, or life, don’t stumble into momentum—they create it. They identify the sparks that ignite energy and use that fuel to propel themselves forward. As we enter this year, the question is: What are your sparks, and how will you ensure they lead to sustained momentum?
Momentum begins with energy. It could be the launch of an innovative project, the buzz of a key win, or the alignment of a shared purpose among team members. This year presents unique opportunities for those ready to seize them. Start by asking yourself: What will be your spark? For some, it’s adopting new technologies to outpace competitors. For others, it’s a commitment to fostering a culture that inspires trust and collaboration.
From all the conversations I have had, I discovered momentum is as much about mindset as it is about action. Leaders must inspire their teams to think and act with purpose, ensuring that their initial energy doesn’t fizzle out but builds into a sustained wave.
Consider the lessons from legendary sports teams. Championship organizations don’t wait for momentum to happen; they prepare for and create moments that inspire belief. Whether it’s a game-changing play or a inspirational team meeting, these sparks remind everyone of what’s possible when they work together.
Businesses can do the same. A powerful kick-off meeting, a breakthrough product launch, or a shared commitment to a transformative goal can serve as the starting gun for a year defined by progress.
Finally, remember that momentum isn’t about starting strong—it’s about staying strong. Teams that consistently succeed do so because they’re relentless in their pursuit of excellence. As you navigate the months ahead, revisit the sparks that started your journey. Reflect on what’s working, adjust when necessary, and keep pushing forward. I will be sharing more of my findings in a book coming out in May.
All of us need to make 2025 is the year of momentum. The teams and organizations that understand its power and harness it effectively will not only thrive—they’ll set the pace for everyone else.
Are you ready to ignite your spark?
