Recent findings from the Common App’s analysis of over 786,000 college applicants reveals that around 40%, do not complete their intended degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Medicine (STEMM). This data serves as a wakeup call for parents who want to ensure college success for their children in these critical fields.
For parents, one of the most impactful ways to support your children’s STEMM aspirations is through mentorship. Encourage your children to seek mentors in their areas of interest—teachers, professionals, or even older students who have walked a similar path. These mentors can provide invaluable guidance, share insights from their own experiences, and help your children navigate the complexities of their educational journey. As a parent, facilitating these connections by encouraging involvement in networking events and workshops can open doors for your children.
