Because of a new-found type of work called “the passion economy.”
“With the passion economy becoming mainstream, new kinds of careers drawing upon a person’s intrinsic curiosity will become the norm,” the World Economic Forum predicted in 2022. Many professionals are leaving (or considering leaving) their current jobs because of this one primary ingredient–passion.
That’s what FlexJobs discovered in their 2024 survey of more than 3,000 U.S. professionals, which showed that 61% of workers prioritise “meaningful work” when weighing up their career advancement options–to the extent that following one’s sense of meaning and passion was ranked within the top 10 factors workers considered to be most important in a new job.
We are wired as humans to find satisfaction and joy in our work. After all, work is where we spend at least a third of our lives–particularly during our prime years. Sometimes, a job may not be outright toxic (it may not have obvious red flags and the work environment and culture could be perfect) but it’s toxic for you because it stifles your growth and creativity. The pay and working conditions could be perfect, but deep down in your heart you know that’s not where you’re supposed to be.
You might have heard the often-repeated quote, “Find a job you enjoy, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” But what does that really mean?
Sometimes, the answer to finding a job you love may not lie in anything an employer can provide for you. Often the solution lies within you, in something that you already practice as a hobby or have a strong interest in, which you can do independently of a traditional job. You might be able to turn this into profit later. And once you get started, you’ll wish you started much earlier. Often we delay following our passions, not because we’re powerless, but because we make excuses like, “I don’t have the time,” “I’m not really an expert,” or “this won’t make any money.”
